Get Medical Attention for Precancerous Lesions

Long-term sun exposure can cause a precancerous lesion that is commonly called actinic keratosis or solar keratosis. These frequently develop on the face, ears, scalp, neck, forehead, back of your hands, and other areas that are exposed to the sun or indoor tanning most often.

The lesions are pink-red in color and feel like dry rough spots on your skin. If you have fair hair, light hair, and/or light eyes you're more likely to develop them. Older people who have been in the sun more have an increased chance of actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratosis is a cause for concern and treatment because the lesions can turn into squamous cell carcinoma (cancer). At Bradenton Dermatology & Laser Center, we take this condition very seriously. When you visit our office, we'll do an examination and make a diagnosis. A biopsy may be necessary for an accurate diagnosis. If treatment is warranted, our physician can draw from a number of options.

Actinic Keratosis Treatment and Care Options

Our treatment recommendations will be based on the extent of the actinic keratosis, its location on your body, the number of spots, and other factors. Treatments may include all or some of the following:

  • Cryotherapy— Freezing the lesion

  • Topical treatments— Including chemotherapy cream an immunomodulators

  • Chemical peels— Removing the lesion with acid

  • Photodynamic therapy— Treatment with special light

Above all else, we at Bradenton Dermatology & Laser Center recommend prevention. Strict sun avoidance is best, and strong sunscreens should be used whenever you're outdoors. These can prevent recurrences and prevent new lesions from developing.

I had the best health care experience today at this business. I needed help, walked in, and was treated excellently and taken right in and treated. The staff was very polite, and professional. They charged me a fee that was more than fair and followed up later that day over the phone to make sure I was doing great. I hope I don’t ever have to go back to a dermatologist, but if I do, I know which one.
